Message from the President, Residents Association of NAMS

It is both a privilege and an honor to serve as the President of the Residents Association of NAMS. At the heart of our institution are the residents—committed young physicians who dedicate countless hours to patient care, academics, and research, while also carrying the responsibility of upholding the values and reputation of NAMS. This association exists to recognize, support, and advocate for the welfare of every resident, ensuring that their voices are heard and their needs are addressed.

Residency is a unique journey—demanding, transformative, and often overwhelming. It tests not only our clinical acumen but also our resilience, compassion, and ability to work as part of a larger healthcare team. During this phase, residents face challenges that extend beyond academics: long duty hours, emotional strain, financial burdens, and the constant balance between personal life and professional demands. It is precisely for these reasons that the Residents’ Association stands firm as a pillar of support. Our foremost goal is to safeguard the welfare of residents by working towards fair duty hours, ensuring access to health and mental well-being resources, and creating safe spaces for dialogue and grievance redressal.

Equally important is fostering a sense of community. Residency can sometimes feel isolating, but we believe that no resident should ever feel alone in their journey. Through academic programs, wellness initiatives, cultural events, and sports activities, the Association strives to strengthen the bond among residents, cultivating an environment of friendship, solidarity, and shared growth. We are committed to promoting inclusivity, celebrating diversity, and ensuring that every member feels respected and valued.

Beyond welfare and community, we also recognize the vital role of residents in shaping the academic and clinical future of NAMS. As a body, we actively advocate for structured teaching schedules, research opportunities, and mentorship programs that empower residents to excel both nationally and globally. Our vision is not only to support residents during their time here but also to prepare them for distinguished roles as leaders, teachers, and innovators in healthcare.

We are also mindful of our responsibility to society. Residents form the backbone of patient care in our institution, often being the first responders, the constant caregivers, and the empathetic listeners. As an Association, we encourage service beyond the wards—public health outreach, community awareness programs, and voluntary initiatives that extend the spirit of NAMS beyond hospital walls.

As we move forward, my promise as President is simple: to listen, to advocate, and to act. Every decision we make will be guided by the principle of residents’ welfare and the collective good of our community. Together, we can build an environment where residents not only survive the challenges of training but truly thrive—academically, professionally, and personally.

Let us continue this journey with unity, purpose, and the unshakable belief that the well-being of residents today will shape the excellence of healthcare tomorrow.

With warm regards,
Dr SUNIL ARYAL
